7 reasons to practise restorative yoga regularly

Restorative Yoga is a very slow practice with the goal of restoring our energy levels. And who wouldn’t like to feel more energetic? It’s definitely for all of us. That said you may also be recovering from an illness or stressful situation which makes restorative yoga a double must for you.  So let’s have a look why you should try restorative yoga.
  1. Deep rest and feeling of renewed energy. As this is the very goal of restorative yoga I couldn’t but put it as a number one reason. In restorative yoga positions we look for an impeccable comfort and support. The support is provided by using blocks, bolsters and cushions. When your body feels supported it’s happy to deeply relax and let go of physical and emotional tensions.
  2. Body awareness and gentle stretching. Stretching is not really the main goal behind restorative yoga but the gentle positions encourage you to bring your awareness into your body and notice any restrictions. In our sedentary lifestyles of too much computer use the gentle chest opening restorative yoga position is one of the most important pose for all of us as it counteracts the usual ‘shoulders and head forward, chest in’ posture.
  3. Breath awareness. You cannot relax if your breath is shallow and fast. And vice versa – you cannot stress and get angry if your breath is deep and regular. Knowing how we breathe and learning a deep abdominal breath is an important step on your way to health and wellbeing. You’ll also feel more alive and energetic if your body gets a proper supply of oxygen.
  4.  Mindfulness and self-love. In restorative yoga we stay in the positions for several minutes which gives us the chance to meditatively observe ourselves. We tend to run away from ourselves in the everyday life. There is nowhere to go on your mat. It’s just you and your breath to focus on. You’ll develop self - awareness and acceptance by the mindful and meditative observation of yourself.
  5. Stress reduction. All the reasons mentioned above lead to relieving stress in everyday life. Gradually you’ll transfer the mindfulness on your mat into whatever you do off the mat as well.
  6. Balance ‘the doing and achieving’ attitude. Culturally we are ‘programmed’ to do and to achieve. This constant busyness can lead to burn out if it’s not balanced by regular times of rest and deep relaxation. Continuing stress can lead to your body switching into the fight and flight response permanently. You need to switch back to the rest and digest response regularly!
  7. To do nothing without feeling guilty about it. Enjoy!
